Line Animation: Design Trends for 2021 (pt 3)

Unassuming and uncluttered, hand-drawn line animation is a modern fit for life in 2021. Trending in 2020, it’s red hot now. The raw quality of hand-drawn shapes shift attention and highlight points of interest. Lines are design multi-taskers, lending hand-crafted artistry to animated projects.

Our motion graphics for Discovery’s Alaska: The Last Frontier season 10 put this trend to work. The sketches unfold quickly, bringing life to buildings, bridges and even a bulldozer. The nimble pace indicative of the adaptability needed to sustain life in this harsh wilderness. Neutral creams set up an authentic backdrop for this project. Antique linen and snow are absorbed as pure and calm, much like the landscape. Earthy shades of hazelnut and coffee stimulate feelings of warmth and strength. Brown is best associated with resilience and security, making it invaluable in wild Alaska. Hues of juniper and pine exhibit the organic growth and renewal of the surrounding forests. The steel blue sky and rivers act as a balance, establishing both solitude and harmony.
